Over the last decade, commercialized gambling has grown rapidly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Tanzania's gambling industry is no exception and is projected to make $41m USD in 2023, driven by internet-mediated sports betting. The limited literature on these developments and on the harms involved in the expansion of gambling exists. No Tanzanian study has used qualitative methodologies to examine the practices, experiences, and impacts of betting in the lives of sports bettors and their families and particularly on the health of the individuals and of the public. Our study will address this by undertaking interviews and providing insights to inform research and policy priorities.
